Rock Salmon – On The Rocks!

The Problem

Rock Salmon

Spiny Dogfish or Spurdog were at one time the most abundant shark species in the world.  However intensive fisheries pressure has brought many populations around the world to the brink of catastrophe. The North East Atlantic population has declined by over 95%, in this region Spiny Dogfish are now considered Critically Endangered on the IUCN Redlist.

Consumed in many European countries Spiny Dogfish are favoured by fish and chip shops in the UK.  Customers consume Rock Salmon, Rock Eel or Flake probably unaware that they are buying an endangered shark.

Current Front-Bench Spokesman on Fisheries for the UK Conservative Delegation of MEPs. Struan Stevenson commented to the Shark Trust, “It is essential that all Fish & Chip Shops stop selling Rock Salmon immediately. In the meantime the European Commission should take urgent steps to provide this slow-maturing species of shark with proper protection, prohibiting the catching of Spurdog.”

The Rock Salmon National Public Survey

In response to these concerns the Shark Trust has launched a national public survey of the estimated 13,000 fish and chip shops in the UK. This is where you can help!

British Fish and Chip shops are the latest focus in a bid to halt the demise of a once common shark. But with 13,000 fish and chip shops throughout the UK, we need you help!

Next time you walk past your fish and chip shop simply look at the menu and see what they are selling. We are keen to know either way. While you’re looking it would also be good to know how many shops also have skate on the menu.

Once you’ve checked out your local chippy please send us an email with the following information to:sharktrust@yahoo.co.uk

• Shop name
• Street
• Town
• Rock Salmon yes/no
• Skate yes/no
• Huss yes/no

We have received several emails asking whether mobile fish and chip vans and fish restaurants are included in this survey, the answer is YES PLEASE! Information on any fish outlets will be greatly appreciated.

Please note: Despite its Critically Endangered status it is perfectly legal to sell Spiny Dogfish and skate so please don’t confront the shop staff – they aren’t breaking the law.

The results you have provided us so far for the fish and chip shop survey have been mapped Take a Look!

Shark Trust

Hi! Welcome to Shark Action

Thanks to http://www.freenaturepictures.com/shark-pictures.php for image

People kill over 100 million sharks every year. We kill them out of misplaced fear, for sport and for food. We kill them for oil and cartilage to make unfounded and illogical medical products. We use shark in tacky clothing, in cosmetics and skin care products.

This wide use of sharks has lead to mass endangerment. 8 species of sharks are now listed as endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

It is the Sharks fins that are most highly prized. Caught in nets or on longlines, the Sharks have their fins hacked off, very often while still alive. The mutilated shark is then thrown back into the sea to bleed to death, or to be attacked by other marine life.

The fins are dried, and are then sold on, often illegally. Long, noodle-like collagen fibers are extracted from the fin and can then be made into Shark Fin Soup.

Please check back here for how you can help.
